The correlation between the bulk densi ty and the humus content of air-dried, sifted cultivated soil has been investigated. The investigation included soil samples with a wide variation in humus content and distinguished between clay (68 samples), silt (58 samples) and sand (66 samples). The bulk densities were determined by weighing 5.5 ml soil, sampled with a scoop. The humus content was calculated by multiplying the organic carbon con tent by 1. 724. The organic content was determined by means of a Leco instrument, equipped with a high frequency oven and an IR-detector to detect the C02 content in the combustion gas. The organic C content was read directly as % carbon C.nb_NO
